Paint Party Friday...stocking my shop

This one?

Or this one?

Or what about this one?

I have finally taken the plunge and registered with the tax man to become self employed as an artist (alongside my full time bill paying job - I'm not crazy!).  Yay, me!

This means  if I ever find the time I can sell my greetings cards and ACEOs at craft fairs and I can officially open an Etsy store and a Zazzle store and even a Red Bubble store.  I can now officially take commissions on pointy portraits too. I haven't quite managed to get round to stocking these stores completely yet but I have added a few things to my Etsy store and spent half of last night trying to make a banner fit 720x100 pixels - after several attempts where the pictures looked all squished, I moaned to S and he showed me how to start with a template the right size and add the pictures rather than try to reduce the size afterwards. And whaddya know, it worked!!

I'd love your opinion on which banner I should use - just a slight difference between them but am not sure which to go with. Is 4 pictures too many or does 3 look lopsided? Sorry they're so tiny but that's the size they need to be for the banner to fit my shop!

In other news this week, I've been mostly working on the portrait of my friend that I showed a wee bit of last week. For now you'll have to take my word for it but I am very pleased to report that it is actually a pretty good likeness and so I will be giving it to her as a gift after all!! I was putting off doing the mouth as I really don't like doing teeth so much but I think it turned out ok. Anyway, here's a sneaky peek of the bottom half of her face. Once I have given it to her next month I can post a photo of it in full along with her actual photo so you can see if I did her justice!!

Another sneaky peek!

Finally,  I got Reuben's portrait back from the framers and I love it.  Now, we just need to get to the paint shop to redo the living room walls...!

Now I just need to hang it!
Don't forget to pop over to Paint Party Friday to see what artistic goodies everyone has brought to the party this week!

  3. Congrat to become a self-employed artist. Well Done!

All the banners are good but would pick the 1st one as it ties in to your blog. Unify impression as marketing tool ... :)

  6. Such lovely work! I love the framed Rueben. Awesome. I like the first banner - it feels more balanced to me. I think the name has as much weight as the images and so it's a nice odd number that is balanced. Just one opinion though!

  11. Congrats!!! :)) It's a big step but I'm so excited for you! :) I'm liking the middle banner if it's any help to you. :) I wish you lots of sales. :)

  12. Hi Nicola! Reuben looks fabulous framed and the new piece is looking great. For the banner I find the images on the left very difficult to make out even enlarged. My suggestion is a banner made up of the 3 on the right though I did like the symmetry of 4.

  18. Congratulations!!!! You know I never thought to start with a blank template the right size as the banner! What a brilliant idea. I'm going to have to redo a few of my banners. Rueben looks fabulous all framed up! Thanks for showing us. Happy PPF!

  21. Good luck on your new ventures! i like the top banner myself, tho they are all good. The trick to make teeth look best is to not give too much information. More like just hinting at them tho yours are looking good. HappyPPF!

  22. Happy PPF! The tax man makes it official...welcome to the world of confusing tax documents...or maybe that's only in CA... :)

  23. Good work on getting out and starting on a road of professional artist! Way to go! All the best for you in this new endeavor!

As far as banners, I like the last one - I like that it is the least crowded. I also wanted to mention to you that on my screen only two thumbnail images look crisp - the village on the far left and the doggy and girl on the far right. The images in the center look unclear and smudged in my older screen, it is hard to tell what's in them. Perhaps you have a better screen for graphics and not know how it looks on older computers, so I thought this info may be useful for you.

  26. Congrats on opening your shop- I know you'll do great! I like all your banners, but my fave is the last with just three images- I just prefer odd number grouping to those that are even :)
Your friend is so lucky to be getting such a wonderful gift- WOW I can't wait to see it finished!
And of Reuben is even more amazing framed!
    Happy PPF,

  30. Excellent teeth, LOL. Really, I hate doing teeth too but these look very natural. For the banner, I have to admit that I can't even tell what the second picture in each of them is. Sorry! I think the one with the dog being walked works best at this size, and I'd probably just put that one to the left and then the name. Plus, I really like that particular picture. ;)

  31. Congrats on taking the plunge! I like the first banner the best. Another suggestion would just to do one picture and then your name really big..Thats my 2 centsThanks for yr sweet comments on my peony painting today and my home.

  34. Congrates on the new shop!!!! Good for you!!!
Your teeth are excellant!!! It is so hard to make teeth look good and you did it!!!
Ok I am going to give you my honest opionion. I think there should only be 1 or 2 pics. One of your girls walking the dog and maybe just the head of the other dog and one picture with the stipplig. Shows both of the different styles. But that just me though.

  35. Best wishes on this new adventure! The framed picture is absolutely gorgeous.
I´d say the third banner because it gives your name room to breath and it is in the first place eyes tend to go to.

  36. Hooray for new ventures!!

I think the top banner is my favorite, but they all look good.

Your friend's portrait is looking great and your framed sweetie looks amazing!

  45. good for you! yay! i have always loved the zen effect of pointilism...lovely work

  46. Thank you all so much for the comments as always and thanks for letting me know which banner you liked best and the constructive advice re how they might look on older monitor screens and whether the pictures looks sharp enough - things I hadn't thought of as they looked ok on my screen!! The result was that Banner 1 came 1st, Banner 2 came 2nd and Banner 3 came 3rd!! But there wasn't much in it and I think I might take the advice of Paula who suggested 3 because it gives my name room to breathe and Kat who said the name is as important as the pictures. So, looks like I'll be using banner 3 for now!
