Make a wish...a landscape painting

According to Dictionary.com 'Artistic licence is the freedom to create an artwork, musical work or piece of writing based on the artist's interpretation and mainly for effect'.

I love artistic licence. It frees us to use our imaginations rather than recreating exactly what's there when what's there isn't exactly what we want to paint. Take this painting for example.  This is the original photograph that I took on one of the very few sunny days last summer on top of the dunes at Strathy Beach.

I didn't want to paint a blue sky though so using the wonder that is artistic license I turned day into night, made the wee flower disappear and added a little shooting star (which appear more regularly than buses up these parts!)

I have no other news really, just busy painting away in my new art shed. S is continuing with the work on the outside - this week he built a fence out of old pallets. Here's a wee time lapse of it going up if you want a nosy - you can see me pottering around in my shed while he's working away outside!

I'll leave you with a few quotes attributed to Vincent Van Gogh who painted magical starry skies.

'For my part, I know nothing with any certainty but the sight of the stars makes me dream'

'Be clearly aware of the stars and infinity on high, then life seems almost enchanted after all'

'Go out and paint the stars' (I'm taking this one as a direct order!)

I'll be linking up with Paint Party Friday to see what everyone else has been up to this week. Pop by if you get the chance - there's so much arty wonder there!

  6. Love your wee landscape. I aldo found it so interesting to see your inspiration. I too get inspiration from photos and when I saw yours it looked like so many of mine, yet out artistic licence lets us produce such different finished pieces..You transformed the view into a beautiful night time scene. I saw all the grass and flowers and know in my work that's where I concentrate. It's facinating to see the world through artists like yourself. I smiled at your pallette fence. I mended a broken fence with a pallettes last year..such useful things! ☺

  11. I love all the colors in your miniature seascape night scene. It is so liberating to just let go sometimes and let pure intuition take charge when working on a piece of art. Thank you for the reminder. Thank you too for the thoughtful comment you left on my blog. Blessing

  14. Each week I love to see how you have used your creative mind to make such wonderful works of art. this is really beautiful. I haven't seen a shooting star in years, but they were so common where I lived as a child. I enjoyed the rapid version of the building of the fence. Cute dog, too!

  15. So beautiful!!! And so tiny - you sure are amazing with detail, Nic! I love the night sky.

How great to have a studio now! Did he winterize it as well?

  16. I think maybe you are more inspired by stars because you live in the countryside and see more if them? I barely see them and there is a lamp post outside my house making stargazing difficult. Your starry landscape really glows! Hurrah for artistic license.
